What many do not know is how orchids cover most of the world and other interesting and fun facts about this extraordinary flowering plant.

Here is just a sampling of these facts.

1. With the exception of Antarctica, orchids are found on every continent of the globe.

2. The name orchid derives from the Greek word, “orchis.” Orchis is Greek for the male reproductive organ. This name is a reference to the shape of the bulbous root of the plant.

3. Although orchids come in a myriad of colors including black and green, no orchid is blue.

4. Each year between two hundred and three hundred new species of orchids are discovered. Scientists believe that there are as many as five thousand undiscovered species of orchids in the world.

5. There are more than 25,000 species of orchids occurring naturally. However, there are also 12,000 registered species of orchids that are hybrid – cultivated by humans by combining different species.
