Keep Your Valentine's Day Flowers Looking Fresh

There is nothing more exciting than receiving a beautiful flower arrangement for Valentine’s Day, but how can you ensure to get the most out of your flowers?  There are some simple steps that you can take to make sure that your flowers will stay looking fresh and pretty for as long as possible.

-Change the water in the vase everyday or at least every other day.
-When changing the water, cut the stems of the flowers with a knife
-Don’t use a scissors to cut as this can damage the stem, and shorten the life of the flowers
-Add a packet of flower nutrient to the water to provide nourishment to the flowers and the keep the water clear.
-If you don’t have the prepackaged flower nutrients available, there are things around your house that you can use as a substitute:
          – A teaspoon of sugar or a small amount of clear soda (such as Sprite) will prolong the life of your flowers.
          – Crush up an aspirin and put it in the water to prevent bacterial growth – a splash of lemon juice will also keep bacteria away.
-Flowers like to be kept in cooler temperatures.  Avoid placing them directly under a heating vent or in a place with high temperatures.
          – Water should also not be too warm.  Room temperature or cooler is preferable.
-Make sure to remove any leaves on the stems that will be below the water line.

Follow these simple steps, and you will be able to enjoy your flowers for days to come!!
